“Star on the Road”: A Translation of Jeffrey Cadiente’s “Bituon sa Kadalanan”

(The following poem was written by one of my more promising students in Negros Oriental State University, Jeffrey Cadiente. Dodong Jeffrey is from Mabinay, Negros Oriental, and is currently in his third year taking up BSIT. )

Bituon sa Kadalanan
Ni Jeffrey A. Cadiente

Tungod sa kalayo sa akong
gilakaw
wala na ko’y nakita
bisa’g gamay.
Apan padayon
gihapon ko’g lakaw.

Nakita nako ang gamay
nga bituon sa kadalanan,

ug sa kadogayan
kining bituon
nagkadako

ug nahimong
Kahayag
Pahulayan.

Star on the Road

Because of the distance I have
walked
I could barely
see anything.
But I continued to walk

I saw a small star
on the road,

and slowly this star
grew larger

and larger
until it became
the Light
of Rest.
